The show is centered around a former 90s hip-hop girl group named Nasty B***hes, which is comprised of Brianna “Professor Sex” Robinson (played by Eve J. Cooper), Naomi “Xplicit Lyrics” (Brandy Norwood), Jill “Da Thrill” Sumpter (Naturi Naughton) and Valeria “Butter Pecan” Mendez (Nadine Velazquez).
Their time together as a band did not end happily, though, and the show follows them decades later as they try to forget the past and rebuild their careers despite being estranged from one another.
Here is everything you need to know about the show’s future and if it will be getting a second season.
Will Queen’ Get A Second Season?
Created by Zahir McGhee, the rap drama does not shirk away from tough topics like misogyny in the music industry, ageism, and even conservatorships.
The show had a mid-season break between episodes 8 and 9, and the show returned for its final five episodes on January 4.
One person who took a less prominent role in the second half was Cooper, who went on maternity leave in November 2021 so she could prepare to welcome her first child with husband Maximillion Cooper.
McGhee has spoken on the future of the show, telling Deadline that he hopes to see Cooper return to the fray as Brianna.
He explained: “When Eve told me she was pregnant, we were extremely happy for her. I had just had a baby myself.
“I didn’t know what she planned for the show, but instinctively I asked if she wanted Brianna to be pregnant. That’s when she told me she didn’t and that she had a date set to leave.
“The cast and crew wanted to give her the space to enjoy this incredible time. We will continue to build the story as people will see in episode 9 and she will remain present in the minds of our characters.”
He added that Cooper would be a part of the show for “as long as she wants to be in it.”
In terms of ratings, TVLine reported on Monday, February 14 that the show’s penultimate episode had a record low viewership for the drama, drawing in just 1.03 million viewers compared to its previous 1.9 million average viewership.
The Queens finale is titled “2022” and it was written by McGhee and Lee Johnson, with Crystle Roberson in the director’s chair.
In the finale, the lead group are set to be inducted in the Hip Hop Hall of Fame without Brianna, while Valeria prepares to go solo.
Despite the show’s first season coming to an end, ABC has yet to confirm if it plans to renew the rap drama for a second season.
Queens Season 1 ends on Tuesday, February 15 on ABC at 10 p.m. ET.
