This is according to Neil Druckmann, who is currently serving as creative director for The Last of Us: Part 2. Druckmann spoke on the matter during a panel at the DICE Summit 2018, where he revealed that before the studio settled on a third-person view for the original Last of Us, there were talks of the game being first-person. Of course, that didn’t come to pass, but that doesn’t mean Naughty Dog has abandoned the idea of making a first-person game entirely.

While it would be a major departure from the studio’s previous work, it wouldn’t be the first time Naughty Dog stepped outside its comfort zone. As some may recall, the studio was known for its mascot platformers before deciding to go for a realistic art style and more grounded story with the Uncharted series. And from there, it turned its attention to horror and an emotional, character-driven narrative with The Last of Us. Considering the studio’s pedigree, it’s easy to trust that it would be successful in making a first-person game.

Of course, Naughty Dog could always end up making another third-person game instead. Whether that’s a fifth entry in the Uncharted series, another Last of Us sequel, a return to Jak and Daxter, or something entirely different remains to be seen, however.

Naughty Dog’s next game after The Last of Us: Part 2 won’t be seen for quite some time, perhaps even years. The Last of Us: Part 2 doesn’t even have an exact release date, and while rumors peg it for a 2018 launch, it could very well slip into 2019. After Naughty Dog finishes development on that particular project and wraps up its post-launch support, then fans should expect to see its next project at an event like E3 or the PlayStation Experience.
