After Kojima parted ways with Konami, he started his own studio, allowing him greater freedom to unleash his ideas. Gamers have already gotten a taste of unchained Kojima with Death Stranding, a game that has players making delivers in a post-apocalyptic America where the dystopian landscape is just as dangerous as the undead BTs that loom. While not all gamers were able to make sense of the game, it clicked with enough people for the public to be curious about what Kojima will do next.
According to some rumors and reports, it seems Kojima could be working on a couple of games on a project with Xbox via Cloud Gaming (which seems to be Overdose) and potentially even a Death Stranding sequel. The latter is relatively clear in terms of gameplay and content matter, but many may be wondering whether Overdose is a horror game.

What Is Overdose?
During 2022’s Summer Game Fest, Kojima made a not-so-surprise appearance where he spoke a little about what his studio is up to. He revealed that Kojima Productions and Microsoft have struck a deal to release an Xbox game, and the game will make use of Microsoft’s cloud technology. This is an exciting announcement, as it opens up the possibility for some truly unique gameplay design from Kojima. There was not much information given regarding the upcoming game, although Kojima did let gamers know that they will probably have to suffer through a bit of a wait before they can play the game.
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the upcoming game. It is unlikely to be Death Stranding 2, as the franchise seems to be closely associated with PlayStation, which has led gamers to believe Kojima is working on a new IP. Industry insider Tom Henderson claims the game is codenamed Overdose, and it will feature Margaret Qualley, who played Mama in Death Stranding. According to Henderson, the game can be played in both first-person and third-person, and it can be controlled via mobile, which may be where Microsoft’s cloud technology comes into play.
Is Overdose a Horror Game?
Kojima has yet to confirm or deny that his upcoming game is Overdose or that Henderson’s leak is correct. However, considering Henderson’s impressive track record, it is likely that there is at least a morsel of truth to the leak. While it is impossible to confirm what genre Kojima’s upcoming game is at present, all available evidence points to the fact that it will likely be a horror game.
According to Henderson, who received footage of the game, he saw a character walking down a dark corridor and was also the victim of a jump scare, which suggests that Overdose may be a horror game. This would not be surprising to any Kojima fan, as he has expressed interest in making another horror game for a while. Famously, Kojima was meant to develop Silent Hills, but the game has never seen the light of day, save for a demo titled P.T. Although Death Stranding is not a horror game, it features several horror elements and can be downright unnerving during certain segments.
Overdose could be Kojima’s opportunity to make the horror game he has always aspired to make, and with Microsoft’s cloud technology, it could be a truly unique game with innovative gameplay. It will likely be some time before gamers get more official news about the game, but at the very least, they can rest assured that Kojima is hard at work on his next project. If it does turn out to be a horror game, and Kojima applies everything he has learned from decades in the industry, Overdose could be a truly terrifying experience.
Death Stranding is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5.
