More news should be coming soon, but the key word is “should.” With COVID-19, relative silence from From Software, and the ambitions of Elden Ring, it’ll be interesting to see how, when, and where news crops up next. However, as excited as these fans are for a new From Software title, just as many (if not more) are still hung up on one key thing: a sequel to Bloodborne.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring seems to have everything going for it. Not only is From Software making the title, a big name in the gaming industry with a growing amount of pedigree, but Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin has work in on the game world and lore. It has huge ambitions of a more “open field” approach than past games, and a lot of rumors have painted an epic development for the next Souls-like game. And despite the lack of news, it says something that fans have rallied around this so strongly.

However, Elden Ring may very well be a third establishment of the Souls formula, not a replacement for others. Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls established the main formula, and many see Bloodborne’s changes as yet another. After all, Soulsborne was a term quickly picked up, differing slightly from the broader Souls-like term. Sekiro, in a way, can be seen as an off-shoot of all this, while Elden Ring remains to be seen. Whether or not “Soulsring” becomes a term or Elden Ring sets its own precedent, it’s not likely to fall simple into the Souls game formula, nor is it likely to follow suit within a “Soulsborne” genre.

Bloodborne 2

Presumably, Bloodborne 2 would be another PlayStation exclusive like the original, which will likely matter more than it initially seems. Elden Ring is a multi-platform release, further separating it from Bloodborne. And aside from the obvious combat differences in Dark Souls and Bloodborne, the aesthetics of the Bloodborne world are one draw from the game separate from its pedigree. This is something that Elden Ring can’t truly replicate, so as a base of comparison, they exist but there’s nothing to suggest Elden Ring is enough to wipe out hype for Bloodborne 2.

That said, Elden Ring is the next From Software title. Fans are likely to spend hours of their life on it, and for a short time period, fans may not be calling for Bloodborne 2 as much. Elden Ring will likely take center stage in the months leading up to and after its actual release, but there’s no forgetting Bloodborne. Calls for a sequel are going nowhere until From Software announces the title, however far in the future that is.

Elden Ring is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
