For those unaware, although Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot currently adapts only the stories from the original Dragon Ball Z anime, a recent image indicates that the game’s first DLC will cover the Gods of the Universe Saga. Although some characters like Future Trunks didn’t get the spotlight they deserved during the main story of DBZ: Kakarot, it can’t be denied that the two fusion based characters, Gotenks and Vegito, got the worst treatment of all. They are hardly playable during the main stories and completely unavailable in the end game sequences. Many are looking to the DLC as a way to fix that.

Vegito and Gotenks in DBZ: Kakarot
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot infamously snubs two of the franchise’s most popular characters, although not without good reason. To an extent, it makes sense that Vegito and Gotenks are not playable given that they rely on methods of fusion to even exist, but there are certainly ways to get around this. For one, the fusion dance simply wears off after thirty minutes, and Trunks and Goten seem to have it mastered, meaning there should be no reason that those characters shouldn’t have an option to become unplayable for short thirty minute periods while Gotenks is in the party.
Vegito is a somewhat different case, though, since the Potara earrings in Dragon Ball Z are meant to be a permanent method of fusion. This fact is told to Goku by the Elder Kai, but is later refuted in Dragon Ball Super, in which the Potara fusion is only permanent if used by Kai. There are two ways this could be handled; this major DBZ retcon could come early and the Potara fusion could be handled in the same way the fusion dance is, or the dragon balls could be used to undo the fusion.
To make matters worse, Future Trunks is playable at the end of the game, even though his appearance is even less justifiable than the fusions between Saiyans. In Kakarot, Bulma of the present makes a time machine of her own so that Future Trunks can come back to the present and… hang out with everyone? It’s wildly unrealistic, but audiences are willing to suspend their disbelief for the chance to play as the fan favorite character again. If that is the case, though, why can’t the same be done for Gotenks and Vegito?
DBZ: Kakarot DLC Playable Characters
If the upcoming DLC does in fact adapt the Gods of the Universe storyline, then fans of the fused fighters do have something to look forward to. During the former half of the saga, Beerus invades Earth and makes the decision to destroy the planet. One by one the Z Fighters attempt to take the god down, but to no avail. One such combatant is actually Gotenks, who appears after Trunks and Goten decide the situation is dire enough to warrant fusion. With this piece of knowledge, fans can rest assured that DBZ: Kakarot’s DLC should include, at the very least, one fight with the player as Gotenks.
Vegito fans are less fortunate, though. Although Vegito does make an appearance in Dragon Ball Super during the Future Trunks Saga, he is not seen in either portion of the Gods of the Universe Saga. Vegeta and Goku face Beerus separately and overpower the likes of Golden Frieza without even needing to consider the fusion. This means that. unless a fusion mechanic is introduced with the DLC, fans will likely have to wait to use the time machine to play Vegito again against Super Buu.

Fusion in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
In conclusion, it may be possible for fans to play Gotenks again in this upcoming DLC, but the only way fans will get to play Vegito without using the time machine is if a fusion mechanic is added. This could take the form of another menu within the pause screen and allow the player to essentially substitute Goten and Trunks or Goku and Vegeta out for either Gotenks or Vegito respectively. This sort of a substitution would make the two participants unusable for a time but allow access to the fused fighter. Additionally, there would likely be a time limit attached to both the fusion and the cooldown period (similar to how the dragon balls work) before the fusion is available again.
Something like this would be quite nice to have as an option, but still seems unlikely. Admittedly, Goku and Vegeta don’t simply carry around Potara earrings, and in the case of Vegito, neither off the two halves particularly enjoy the concept of fusing with each other. Still it would be great if such a mechanic were included, as the inclusion of Future Trunks shows that fans are willing to suspend their disbelief if doing so creates a better game experience overall.
Either way, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s Gods of the Universe DLC should be releasing soon, so fans don’t have long to wait in order to find out how these beloved characters will be handled moving forward. Additionally, since DBZ: K version 1.04 didn’t include the time machine, that update should be right around the corner and will likely release before or alongside the DLC. Through this method, fans would at least be able to return to previous segments of the game and play these characters during those battles, but until then it is best to keep fingers crossed for a more satisfying solution to the problem.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
