At the end of Season 5, Part 2, Lucifer became God but the ascent to the throne did come without consequences.

Since Lucifer Season 5, Part 1, Lucifer Morningstar (played by Tom Ellis) has been pretty much at war with his brother Michael. The twins would stop at nothing to come out on top and once God’s throne became available, the rivalry between them was turned up a notch or two.

Michael tried everything in his power to ensure Lucifer would return to hell, leaving God’s throne vacant for him to take. As part of his plan, he wanted to make Lucifer’s love, Chloe Decker (Lauren German) feel guilty, ensuring she would end up in hell and Lucifer would follow.

To do this, sadly Detective Dan Espizona’s (Kevin Alejandro) life came at a cost. He was killed by one of Michael’s men after he began investigating the disappearance of Amenadiel’s (D.B. Woodside) necklace.

Michael, alongside the French mercenaries he hired, wanted to reclaim the necklace in order to assemble the Flaming Sword and take down Lucifer. Espinoza insisted on going alone to visit a potential victim to warn her of the mercenaries in the area, leaving Chloe behind at the LAPD office.

Sadly, Espinoza was shot by one of the men and mortally wounded. He was later found by Chloe and died in her arms.

Espinoza’s death was a part of Michael’s plan to make Chloe feel guilty for not going with Dan, hoping the guilt would send her to hell when she died.

Will Dan Come Back in ‘Lucifer’ Season 6?

The Lucifam were left utterly devastated when Detective Dan Espizona died in Lucifer Season 5, Part 2.

Ever since fans have been wondering whether Dan will return for the sixth and final series. Since Season 5, Part 2 premiered there have been several theories on how Dan could return, from resurrection to flashbacks.

Thankfully, there is good news for fans of Dan Espizona, Kevin Alejandro will return as Dan in Lucifer Season 6. The news of Alejandro’s return was officially confirmed in a photo gallery of the upcoming series released by Netflix.

In one of the photographs, it is revealed Amenadiel has decided to follow in the footsteps of Dan and join the LAPD after Dan applied on Amenadiel’s behalf before his death.

In the picture as Amenadiel takes a statement from an elderly woman in her garden, Dan can be seen sitting on an armchair behind Amenadiel, watching on.

It looks like Dan may appear as a special mentor figure to Amenadiel as he completes his police training.

As Amenadiel is a celestial being, it is even more likely he and Dan will have full conversations in real-time instead of Dan being a figment of Amenadiel’s imagination.

As an angel, Amenadiel also can travel to and from hell, so perhaps Dan will be appearing in Season 6 a lot more than originally thought.

Originally, Season 5 was supposed to be the show’s final series, with Dan’s death forming a huge part of the show’s ending.

However, Netflix reversed its decision to cancel the drama and renewed Lucifer for a final 10-episode long series in late 2020.

Speaking to TV Line following the premiere of Season 5, Part 2, Alejandro teased he would be returning for the show’s final season.

He said: “I wanted to be with these relationships and with these people to the very end…. Joe [Henderson] and Ildy [Modrovich] respected that, and thankfully they wanted me to be a part of it as well.

“So they found a gentle way to bring me back—not the way people are going to expect him to come back, and maybe not as a huge part of the show. But I got to be there for the end in some capacity.”

Lucifer co-showrunner Modrovich added: “We could not do another season without ‘Detective Douche.’ We refuse to. So, yeah, we found a story for him that we just love.”

Lucifer Season 6 premieres Friday, September 10 on Netflix
