While every hook has opportunities and scenes that make them worth experiencing with a character at least once, some hooks leave room for a wider variety of scenes and opportunities. Some can even present scenarios that can lead to gear and transformations players wouldn’t find otherwise. For players looking for certain benefits or mechanics, it’s just a matter of knowing which hooks to look into.

10 Weird

The Weird hook certainly lives up to its name with the opportunities it holds, offering one scene and one side quest to any party with a hero that has it in their characteristics. The victory scene isn’t too dramatic, but can offer a chance at finding equipment if the player has a crow, bear, or wolf-touched hero in the party with them.

The opportunity, however, can add a permanent buff of either .7 potency or .5 to armor, health, and warding. Though it may seem small in theory, this can be just what a hero needs when combined with their gear and items.

9 Brokenheart

Brokenheart is a simple, effective hook with a single opportunity attached to it. In the opportunity, the hero returns to the grave of a lost love, and the player is given a choice between a moment of silence or attempting a memorial.

Both heroes will gain +1 to their health no matter what choice they make, but should a memorial succeed, they will each gain +10 to their retirement age. While this bonus is left to chance, the benefit provided to not one but two heroes can go a long way, especially in longer campaigns where older heroes retiring is a concern.

8 Slacker

A relatively straightforward hook with one opportunity, heroes with the Slacker hook have more merit to them than the name might suggest. During the opportunity, the hero will get to decide whether they want to fight off a group of bandits blocking the road during their supposed break from adventuring, or take another route.

No matter the choice the player makes, they’ll enjoy reliable rewards, whether it will come in the form of either legacy points or a sizable bonus to their charisma or tenacity will depend on the route they choose.

7 Inhabited

For a darker, more concrete effect on a hero’s story and gameplay, the Inhabited hook is not only a hook the hero can start with, but acquire on their adventures in a variety of ways as well. As a result, the Inhabited hook will not only provide bonuses to the hero, but doesn’t need to take up space in a hero’s starting hooks in order to do so.

For heroes that gain the Inhabited hook in any way, the opportunity attached will provide a new artifact weapon that heals the user with every kill. It also offers the eventual opportunity for a new transformation.

6 Mysterious

A hook with as many perks as there are unanswered questions about its hero, a Mysterious hook leaves no shortage of things to discover about the hero. It offers an urgent opportunity that wakes the hero in the middle of the night and provides a legacy point or ten year bonus to their retirement.

This hook also offers several scenarios while exploring that can result in artifacts, a new recruit, or even a transformation. Players will find no shortage of discoveries and advantages that come with having a mysterious adventurer in their party.

5 Dreamer

For many players, incursions, particularly toward the later stages of a campaign, can become frustrating or overwhelming as their strength and frequency continue to grow. Whether it’s the constant threats impeding travel, the destruction wrecking a party’s supplies, or wasting time traveling back and forth repairing towns after incursions, the Dreamer opportunity can be a godsend for a party scrambling in the final stages of their adventure.

If heroes can afford to let the hero with the Dreamer trait leave the party, every incursion for the rest of the campaign will have a 50% chance of being prevented by that hero.

4 Lucky

For any hero, whether they’ve just started out or are well into their adventuring career, luck will always play an important role in how their adventures go both in and out of combat. While the Lucky hook may not improve a hero’s luck on its own, it does provide players with an opportunity to earn an item that significantly boosts the user’s block, dodge, and stunt chance.

Even without said item, players who enjoy the thrilling balance of risk and reward their adventures yield will have plenty of scenarios where they can try their luck for items, materials, and even stat bonuses.

3 Integrity

The mark of noble heroism, integrity in Wildermyth does more for their heroes than just earn admiration and goodwill. For heroes with an Integrity hook, their opportunity will test their values as well as offer great rewards no matter the choices they make on their quest.

If they stick to their usual morals, they’ll earn a cloak that’s perfect for a spell caster. On the other hand, keeping the weapon they were meant to destroy will earn them an enchanted dagger as well as a transformation that, in exchange for the hero’s ability to form new relationships, will have a near indefinite retirement age.

2 Wildheart

The Wildheart hook brings equal parts story and gameplay to the table. In addition to the typical advantages of any hook, such as items, artifacts, and a possible transformation, having a hero with the Wildheart hook could be the key to unraveling more mysterious aspects hidden in Wildermyth’s lore.

Should the player encounter the Lord Evergreen spirit, they will usually be presented with only two choices. However, a wild hearted hero is able to unlock a third option, which will earn them a cloak and a blessing from the forest that not only improves charisma, but prevents the hero from aging for the rest of the campaign.

1 Proud

The Proud hook offers a unique benefit to players, one that has grown more valuable with a newer campaign. Unlike other hooks on the list, Proud heroes don’t have any greater chances for rare loot or transformations than the rest of their party. Instead, its value comes with the opportunity a Proud hero is given where they seek out a hermit in exile to lift the curse.

What may have been a minor adventure in the past, now adds a legacy aspect referencing the new Vulture Lord campaign if the heroes fulfill the hermits’ request, unlocking a new campaign for legacy heroes.
