Fed-up of being excluded from events by her MIL, one Redditor decided to make things as “awkward” as possible for the woman’s dinner guests, with her story garnering over 18,000 upvotes from fellow users.

In a post shared to Reddit’s r/AmItheA****** forum on Monday, user u/Throwawaydinner explained that she has been with her husband Bob for three years, and during that time, her mother-in-law has consistently tried to keep her out of family functions.

“[She uses] the excuse of ‘you work too much,’” the Redditor wrote. “Not true because sometimes I do make myself available but yet find myself excluded.”

However, being snubbed at a celebratory dinner was the final straw for the poster. She explained: “His mom invited us for a celebratory dinner at the restaurant after she completed her recovery. I had to [work] that day but I let her and everyone know that I’d be there at 8pm. When I arrived [at] the restaurant I saw that the table was full. All chairs had been taken and I just stood there with complete puzzlement while Bob and his mom just stared at me.

“His mom then told me there was no place left for me and that I could either have Bob get up and take his seat or…go home.”

Angry at the obvious attempt to exclude her from the party, the woman decided to stay at the restaurant and requested an entire table for herself. She ordered dinner and dessert before heading home, with Bob and his mom staring at her the entire time.

“Bob and his mom watched with their eyes popping out of their heads like they saw something so shocking…[Not going to lie] I did get weird looks from the guests but so did Bob and his mom. It was awkward in all honesty,” she wrote.

After her husband returned home, the couple got into a fight, with Bob accusing her of “embarrassing” him and his mom.

“I yelled asking WTF was I supposed to do after I got denied a seat and he told me that it wasn’t his nor his mom’s fault guests arrived ‘before’ me and took all the available chairs,” she said. “I told him he could’ve saved me a chair!!!!!. He said that I could’ve just left instead, and reminded me that I was a ‘guest’ and that I shouldn’t expect this level of entitlement to be ‘accepted.’

“He then went on about how I ruined the entire dinner for him and his mom with what I did and has been pouting about it for days now,” she wrote.

A 2017 survey of 2,000 British people found that 60 percent blamed their in-laws for relationship disputes. The top reasons cited in the 2017 study were in-laws sharing their unwanted opinions, spouses taking their parent’s side in disagreements, and arguments on how to best raise children.

A third of those surveyed described their partner’s parents as “interfering,” while one in 10 said they had gotten divorced because of their in-laws.

Reddit users were horrified by the poster’s husband’s actions, with one commenter, OneArchedEyebrowm describing the situation as “childish bullying.”

“[It’s] just embarrassing,” they said.

User Dangerous-Winter-Elf agreed, writing: “This man don’t need to get a mistress he has his mom. The level of disrespect towards his own wife left my jaw dropped, and I really thought I couldn’t be surprised anymore by reddit.”

Lulu-52 commented: “I’ve gone to dinners/events where there hasn’t been enough seats and the host has always arranged to make room for me. Your husband and mil are purposely excluding you.”

Many users advised the woman to leave her “mama’s boy” husband.

“I hope she leaves before they have kids,” wrote Redditor Ursula2071. “Easier to divorce a momma’s boy when there are no kids involved.Your husband is a sonsband [son-husband] to your MIL and you will always be excluded and disrespected. You deserve better.”

Only-Ingenuity7889 commented: “This was freaking brilliant. I’m proud of you!! I can’t believe your husband didn’t save you a seat. Is he that oblivious or that big of a Mama’s boy jerk?”

Reddit user Cyead wrote: “Do not be afraid to just leave. That will be much better in the long run instead of trying to change a mama’s boy.”

Tales of nightmare mothers-in-law and family feuds are common on AmItheA****** subreddit. A woman was recently applauded by Redditors for installing a gate to keep her intrusive mother-in-law out of her house, while another was praised for kicking her husband and his controlling mom out of the delivery room while giving birth.
