Led by senior guard Tekele Cotton, who scored 19 points to go along with two rebounds and three assists, the Shockers used a suffocating defense. Wichita State (30-4) forced 14 turnovers and held the Jayhawks to just 28.6 percent from the field.

After closing out the first half on a 6-0 run, the Shockers scored 12 of the first 16 points in the second half to hold a 41-30 lead with 15:50 remaining and sported a double-digit lead for most of the second half.

Primarily guarded by Cotton, Kansas star Wayne Selden Jr. was held scoreless and the rest of the Kansas starters combined to make just 13 shots from the field.

No. 2 Kansas (27-9) owned a 12-2 series advantage heading into Sunday’s game, but the Shockers won the last NCAA Tournament matchup. The Shockers advanced to the Elite Eight in 1981 with a 66-65 win over Kansas.

Kansas now has six first-weekend losses as a second seed, the most by any team in NCAA Tournament history.
